About Us

The University of Connecticut grew out of the Storrs Agricultural School, which was founded in 1881 as a direct result of the gift of land, money, and buildings presented to the Connecticut General Assembly by Charles and Augustus Storrs of Mansfield. The Storrs Agricultural School became Connecticut’s Land Grant institution in 1893. The name of the School was changed in 1899 to the Connecticut Agricultural College. Master’s degree study was offered 20 years later, and the first master’s degree was conferred in 1920.

The Graduate School was established officially in 1939 when Governor Raymond E. Baldwin signed legislation that changed the name of the institution to the University of Connecticut. Doctoral study soon was offered, and the University conferred its first Ph.D.’s a decade later.

The Graduate School developed and took shape during the thirty-year Deanship (1940-1970) of Dr. Nathan Laselle Whetten. Today, the University offers graduate degree programs in virtually every field of instruction, and approximately 2,000 graduate degrees and certificates are conferred each year.
