Dissertation Information


Prepare your dissertation according to the published Graduate School specifications. The instructional document can be downloaded from the Graduate School web site or picked up in person from the Graduate School front desk on the second floor of the Whetten Graduate Center.

As you prepare for the oral defense of your dissertation, please follow these instructions.

  1. Announce your oral defense in the University Events Calendar at least two weeks before the date of your defense, as follows:
    • Go to http://www.events.uconn.edu/
    • Click on the Submit Event button.
    • Fill in the following boxes on the page:
      • Title --> Enter Doctoral Dissertation Oral Defense of (Dissertator's Name)
      • Date --> Click on the pull down arrows and select the month, day, and year
      • Start Time -- > Click on the pull down arrows and select the start time
      • End Time --> Click on the pull down arrows and select the end time
      • Calendars --> Click on the Select Calendars button and then click on the Lectures & Conferences selection for the campus where your oral defense will be held
      • Description --> Enter the title of your dissertation
      • Event Sponsor --> Enter your doctoral field of study
      • Location --> Enter the campus (i.e., Storrs, Health Center, or Avery Point) where your oral defense will be held
      • Building Name --> Enter the name of the building where your oral defense will be held
      • Room Number --> Enter the room number where your oral defense will be held
      • Contact Person --> Enter the name of your Major Advisor
      • Contact Email --> Enter your Major Advisor’s UConn e-mail address
    • Click on the Add button to submit your announcement.
  2. Submit the signed Tentative Approval Page to the Graduate School Front Desk at least seven days prior to the date of your defense. The form may be downloaded from the Graduate School web site or picked up in person from the Graduate School front desk on the second floor of the Whetten Graduate Center.

  3. After you successfully complete your defense, your committee may require further revisions of your dissertation. Once you have all the content in shape, you are ready to prepare the final copies. This is associated a number of very specific and detailed requirements. The Graduate School has a FAQ document that covers all of these details. Two of the required documents are the Survey of Earned Doctorates and the UMI Dissertation Agreement . These documents are also available in hard copy at the Graduate School Front Desk in the Whetten Graduate Center.

  4. When you submit your final dissertation copies and supporting materials include a copy of the Dissertation Submission Checklist
