Executive Committee Meeting Minutes: October 11, 2002
Whetten Graduate Center - Giolas Conference Room2:00 P.M.
- The meeting was called to order at 2:05 P.M. Associate Vice Provost James G. Henkel presided.
- There was discussion about the proposal under consideration
to modify the University's calendar. A draft letter summarizing
the main points of the Graduate Faculty Council's 9-25-2002
discussion of the matter was read. Revisions were recommended.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the 9-13-2002
meeting.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve the list of Plans of Study and Dissertation
Proposals.
- There was continued discussion concerning the proposal from
the College of Continuing Studies (CCS) to implement a Master
of Professional Studies (M.P.S.) degree program. Specifically,
the report of the sub-committee formed at the 9-13-2002 meeting
and the response to that document received from the CCS were
considered. Areas needing further CCS clarification were identified.
It was agreed that CCS will be asked to clarify these points,
to incorporate the revised responses to the sub-committee document
in the original proposal, and to present the finished document
for consideration at the November 8th meeting.
- J. Henkel informed the group that the joint UConn/URI Master
of Arts degree program in German that has operated for many
years is in the final phase of closing down. There was brief
discussion.
It was moved (D. Herzberger), seconded (J.Marsden), and passed without dissent on a voice vote to close the program when all currently-active students have had the opportunity to complete their degree requirements.
- It was agreed to call a meeting of the Graduate Faculty Council
for October 30, 2002. The purpose is to meet jointly with the
Graduate Student Senate for a presentation by Dana McGee, Director
of the Office of Diversity and Equity (ODE), and Carlian Dawson,
Director of Training Programs for the ODE. Their topic will
be Diversity in Graduate Education. A social hour will follow
the presentation.
- It was noted that C. Kristina Gunsalus of the University of Illinois will speak on October 17th in the North Reading Room of the Wilbur Cross Building. The title of her presentation is Research Ethics: How to Have a Dispute Professionally.
- G. Anderson, University Senate Liaison, reported.
- L. Strausbaugh, who also serves on the University Senate Growth and Development Committee, spoke about the importance of the Visiting Scholars Program. She moved that the Executive Committee confirms its enthusiastic support for continuing its collaboration with the Senate in this important area. The motion was seconded and it passed unanimously.
- There was discussion about future nominations for honorary degrees. It was agreed to raise the matter at a future time with the Executive Committee and the Graduate Faculty Council.
- There was brief discussion about new reporting requirements concerning international students.
