Executive Committee Meeting Minutes: April 30, 2003

3:00 P.M.
- The meeting was called to order at 3:04 P.M. Vice Provost Janet
L. Greger presided.
- J. Greger noted that the Student Health Service will be open
this summer to serve graduate students and that an announcement
will be made soon. Greger also noted that bids for health insurance
coverage for graduate assistants have been received and will be
opened on 5-1-2003.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the 4-8-2003 meeting.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve the list of Plans of Study and Dissertation Proposals.
- A request from the Health Center to revise the names of two
existing Areas of Concentration under Field of Study Biomedical
Science was considered and discussed. The requested revisions
are: change Genetics, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry to Molecular
Biology and Biochemistry; and change Developmental Biology to
Genetics and Developmental Biology. Following brief discussion,
it was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve the requested changes.
- A proposal from the Department of Communication Sciences to
implement a new Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) program was considered
and discussed. It was agreed that information concerning program
collaborations (including any with the Health Center) as well
as job market data be added to the proposal. Following discussion,
it was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve the proposal.
- There was discussion about the continuing work of the Admissions
and Records, Program Review, and the Graduate School Student Services
Task Forces. In particular, J. Greger called attention to the
conclusions and recommendations of the Admissions and Records
and Program Review groups. Greger distributed copies of a handout
in which the conclusions and recommendations are grouped under
four headings: General Plans, What constitutes good program reviews?,
Ways to reduce efforts that are duplicated or not essential, and
Other housekeeping decisions.
A detailed discussion ensued. A variety of modifications were discussed. It was noted that the draft document as presently written is geared primarily to doctoral programs and that policies, practices, and procedures for master's programs will be incorporated as the process continues.
It was agreed that the document will be revised in terms of this discussion and will be considered by the group at its 5-9-2003 meeting.
