Executive Committee Meeting Minutes: March 9, 2001

Whetten Graduate Center - Giolas Conference Room
2:15 P.M.

  1. The meeting was called to order at 2:30 P.M. Interim Vice Provost Ian C. Hart presided.
  2. It was moved (G. Epling), seconded (P. Faghri), and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the 02-02-2001 meeting.
  3. It was moved (G. Anderson), seconded (P. Faghri), and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve the list of Plans of Study and Dissertation Proposals.
  4. A proposal from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology to implement a joint B.S./M.S. degree program in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology was considered. G. Anderson responded to questions. There was discussion. A question was raised about check points for entry to the proposed joint degree program and for advancement to the master's portion.

Following discussion, it was moved (E. Pagoulatos), seconded (G. Epling), and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve the proposal (G. Anderson abstained).

  5. New-course proposals from the College of Continuing Studies for three new graduate courses were considered and discussed. The titles of the proposed three-credit courses are: Seminar on Complex Humanitarian Emergencies, Applied Organizational Management, and Issues in Humanitarian Studies (the courses are designed to be part of a Certificate program in Humanitarian Studies).

There was discussion about the appropriateness of such courses being offered at a master's level and about ways in which to assure that faculty who would teach these courses possess the necessary qualifications to offer instruction at the graduate level. It was agreed by consensus that a satisfactory model for judging proposals for courses of this kind as well as for judging the qualifications of faculty who would teach them should involve consideration and action by the appropriate academic department(s). Any such course(s) approved by an academic department then would be considered by the school/college Curricula and Courses (C&C) Committee. Once approved by the appropriate C&C Committee, a course proposal and all supporting information would come back to the Graduate School for final approval.

  6. It was noted that the next meeting of the Graduate Faculty Council has been called for March 28th (3:00 - 5:00 P.M. in room 200 of the Whetten Graduate Center). J. Henkel will demonstrate the new PeopleSoft student records software.
