Executive Committee Meeting Minutes: May 5, 2000

- The meeting was called to order at 2:15 P.M. Vice Provost Robert Smith presided. A quorum was declared.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the 3-3-2000 meeting.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve the list of Plans of Study and
Dissertation Proposals. - R. Smith distributed copies of a letter dated 5-5-2000 to Gregory Anderson (with copies to the members of the University Senate Executive Committee and of the Graduate Faculty Council). The letter appoints Anderson as the Graduate Faculty Council Liaison to the University Senate Executive Committee. His term of appointment for this special role extends through January 31, 2003.
- Updates and announcements:
- Jules B. LaPidus, President of the Council of Graduate Schools, is to visit campus to receive an honorary degree at the 2000 graduate Commencement ceremony.
- Continuation of existing summer support for graduate students registering for GRAD 396 & 496 was successfully negotiated with the AAUP.
- The Student Financial Aid Office is now serving all students -graduate as well as undergraduate - on a first-come, first-served basis.
- R. Smith announced that he would be leaving UConn in early June to assume the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Arkansas. There was discussion about the transition of leadership in the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education.
- There was consideration and discussion of a request from Hugh
Magill, Dean of the School of Law, to permit a tenured, full
professor of law -- Robert Birmingham -- to pursue the Ph.D.
program in Biomedical Science at the Health Center. It was noted
that there would be no reason whatever for concern about conflicts
of interest or impropriety.
- It was moved (D. Herzberger), seconded (C. Maresh), and passed without dissent on a voice vote to permit Professor Birmingham to pursue the Ph.D. in Biomedical Science.
- Adjournment was at 2:50 PM.
