Executive Committee Meeting Minutes: May 10, 2002
Whetten Graduate Center - Giolas Conference Room2:00 P.M.
- The meeting was called to order at 2:07 P.M. Associate Vice Provost James G. Henkel presided.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the 4-12-2002
meeting.
- It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice
vote to approve the list of Plans of Study and Dissertation
Proposals.
- There was discussion about developing a set of general principles
to use when considering proposals for Web-based programs. J.
Henkel noted that much has been gleaned already from the group's
discussions on this topic.
- Andrew Rosman, Associate Professor of Accounting and Director
of the M.S. in Accounting Program, and David Lavoie, Instructional
Designer with the Institute for Teaching and Learning, met with
the group to discuss and to demonstrate the proposed Web-based
offering of the existing curriculum of the Master of Science
degree program in the field of Accounting. Upon completion of
the program, candidates must sit for and pass the Connecticut
C.P.A. examination in order to qualify for conferral of the
degree.
Following the demonstration and discussion, it was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve the request to offer the Master of Science degree program in the field of Accounting in a Web-based format.
- J. Henkel introduced Thomas Miller, Professor and Department
Head in the School of Allied Health; Linda Pescatello, Assistant
Professor of Allied Health; and Joseph Smey, Dean of the School
of Allied Health. They were present to discuss with the Committee
the proposal to implement a Ph.D. program in a new Field of
Study to be called Health Promotion Science. It was noted that
the new program would have an interdisciplinary base and that
the proposal does not seek to recreate what already exists across
the University. There was discussion about admissions procedures,
the specific statistics courses that would be required, and
about the likely career paths of those who would complete the
program. It was recommended that the text of the proposal include
concrete examples of the kinds of dissertation research that
would be undertaken. It was agreed that the discussed revisions
and additions should be incorporated in the proposal and that
the group will consider its final action on the proposal at
a future meeting when the final text is available.
- It was agreed not to call a meeting of the Graduate Faculty
Council this month.
- Ian Hart was recognized for his two years of service as Interim Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education and Interim Dean of the Graduate School. Members thanked Hart for his many contributions and tireless efforts throughout the period of his appointment. Hart thanked the group and noted that he has found the experience to be very rewarding.
