Graduate Faculty Council Meeting Minutes: April 29, 1998

3:35 P. M.

  1. The meeting was called to order at 3:42 P.M. Vice Provost Ian Hart presided.
  2. It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the meeting of
    March 25, 1998.
  3. J. Henkel presented for final consideration and action the Report of the Graduate Student Financial Aid Task Force
    [http://vm.uconn.edu/~wwwgrad/gfc.html]. He highlighted the most recent revisions. There was discussion, particularly
    about the minimum numbers of credits that would be required for the master's and for the doctoral degree. There also was
    discussion about the revenue stream that would be created as a result of the new graduate research courses.
    R. Hiskes moved that the Report be approved as presented. The motion was seconded.
  4. As a result of further discussion, S. Sacks moved to amend the motion to change from six to nine the maximum number
    of research credits for which a student may register in a given semester. The motion to amend was seconded (R. McNeal)
    and it passed without dissent on a voice vote.
  5. The question was called. The motion as amended passed without dissent on a voice vote.
  6. R. McNeal requested that departments and programs be notified of the implications of this new requirement vis-à-vis
    the minimum requirements for graduate degrees as prescribed by the Graduate School.
  7. R. Smith discussed with members the draft of his paper entitled People First: Advancing Graduate Education at the
    University of Connecticut Through the Fin de Millénaire.
  8. Adjournment was at 5:35 P.M.
