Graduate Faculty Council Meeting Minutes: December 8, 1999

  1. The meeting was called to order at 3:05 P.M. Vice Provost Robert Smith presided.
  2. It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the meeting of September 29, 1999.
  3. R. Smith introduced Interim Chancellor Fred Maryanski who addressed the Council concerning budget issues affecting graduate education and research. He also responded to questions.
    • Topics included:
      • graduate enrollment trends and the need to recruit high quality graduate students
      • graduate assistantships for teaching and research
      • graduate student support for the initial year or two of study
      • faculty workload and the need for effective external reporting [A specific area-graduate advisement- generally is not well understood by some. Compare and contrast UConn in this regard with peer institutions. Implementation of GRAD 395 (Thesis Research) and 495 (Dissertation Research) have made it possible to document faculty time devoted to thesis and dissertation advisement.]
      • decentralization
      • institutional and programmatic priorities
      • the Capital Campaign
      • travel for participation in and attendance at professional meetings
      • clerical support
      • strategic initiatives
      • institutional balance - undergraduate/graduate, teaching/research
      • strategies for advancing the University's research agenda
      • effective and timely dissemination of information to GFC members concerning developments in various research arenas (e.g., via a secure Web site)
      • faculty involvement in institutional and programmatic development initiatives
