Provost Ian C. Hart presided.

1-31-2001.
- J. Henkel read the following resolution:
AUTHORIZATION TO CONFER GRADUATE DEGREES --
It is recommended that the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of
Dental Science, Master of Engineering, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Music, Master of Public Affairs, Master of Public Health, Master of Science, Master of Science in Physical Therapy, Master of Social Work, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy be conferred on those candidates who have satisfied all requirements and have been duly certified by the Graduate School for award of said degrees throughout the conferral periods ending May 20, 2001; August 31, 2001; and December 31, 2001.
It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to adopt the resolution.
- I. Hart updated members about concerns pertaining to the
University's ability to provide suitable on-campus accommodations
for longer-term visiting scholars. The Lakeside Apartments facility
is being considered
for possible conversion to office space. He also noted that efforts are underway to pursue the possible
inclusion of a lounge for graduate students in the plans to renovate the Student Union.
- I. Hart introduced Vicky L. Triponey, Vice Chancellor for
Student Affairs, and Carole S. Henry, Executive Director of
Housing and Food Services, who made a presentation to the Council
about graduate student housing on campus and about plans in
this regard for the future. They distributed copies of an extensive
handout, which is attached to file copy of these minutes. There
was extensive discussion about the Hilltop Apartment complex
currently under construction. A model of a unit as well as fabric
and carpet samples were displayed. There also was considerable
discussion about serving future needs of graduate students in
terms of expanded on-campus housing options. The point was made,
for example, that many graduate students are in search of unfurnished
housing at reasonable rates. The Department of Residential Life
is creating a set of brochures and pursuing other forms of publicity
to get the word out to students concerning these new developments
and opportunities in the area on-campus housing.
- Copies of a progress report on the functioning of the approval
process for Dissertation Proposals (implemented in 1996) were
distributed.
- Adjournment was at 4:21 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Thomas B. Peters
