Graduate Faculty Council Meeting Minutes: January 27, 1999

3:00 P. M.

  1. The meeting was called to order at 3:05 P.M. Vice Provost Robert Smith presided.
  2. It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the meeting of October 14, 1998.
  3. Newly-elected members of the Council introduced themselves.
  4. An election was held to fill two seats (three-year terms) on the GFC Executive Committee (David Camaione and Emilio Pagoulatos have completed their terms). R. Smith called for nominations. There were two: Pouran Faghri and Emilio Pagoulatos.
    • It was moved (A. Baldwin), seconded (S. Sacks), and passed without dissent on a voice vote to close nominations. It then was moved, seconded, and passed on a unanimous voice vote to elect Faghri and Pagoulatos by acclamation.
  5. A draft document concerning Faculty Development was introduced for discussion by R. Smith. The document was written by Smith and by Susan Steele, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Instruction. Included in the draft document was a diagram prepared by Keith Barker, Director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning. Steele and Barker were present to speak about the draft document. The document's focus is the relationship among the University's missions of teaching, research, and service (with special emphasis on teaching and research).
    • Discussion ensued. Topics included: effective methods for evaluating teaching and research, the tenure review process, portfolio development and review, institutional support services for faculty members and graduate students who teach, use of the Internet in teaching, student evaluations of teaching, thesis and dissertation advisement, and the like.
  6. Adjournment was at 4:58 P.M.
