Graduate Faculty Council Meeting Minutes: October 14, 1998

1. The meeting was called to order at 3:09 P.M. Vice Provost Robert Smith presided.
2. It was moved, seconded, and passed without dissent on a voice vote to approve as distributed the minutes of the meeting of April 29, 1998.
3. Vice Provost Smith addressed the Council on the state of the Graduate School. Copies of the draft Strategic Plan of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Education and the Graduate School, 1998-2003 were distributed. The draft Plan is titled Pathbreaking . . . , Keeping People First . . . , Forging Partnerships . . . : Advancing Research, Graduate Education and Related Outreach Through the Fin de Millénaire.
4. Following the presentation, there was discussion about several of the points made in the
   presentation and about the major elements of the draft Plan. There was discussion about the
   proposed reallocation of Graduate School fellowship funds, particularly with respect to
   developing criteria as well as how best to assess program quality and outcomes. There also
   was discussion about the importance of the University's strong commitment to diversity in
   research, graduate education, and related outreach.
5. Adjournment was at 4:39 P.M.
