Admission Requirements for International Applicants

The following are the minimum qualifications for admission to the Graduate School. Seats in any incoming class are competitive and are almost always limited. Just meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee you admission to a program. During the admission process the faculty evaluate your promise for superior achievement in your discipline and depending on the number of applicants, you may need qualifications substantially greater than the published minimums.

  • You must hold a baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or present evidence of the equivalent to be eligible for admission.

  • You must submit to the Graduate School official transcripts covering all of your previous academic work (both undergraduate and graduate). It must meet one of the following criteria:
    • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for your entire undergraduate record or
    • A grade point average of at least 3.0 for your last two undergraduate years or
    • Excellent work in your entire final undergraduate year (3.5 or better) or
    • Graduate work with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better
  • Applicants to many programs must submit test scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Some programs require GRE Subject Tests. Business programs require the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Check with your intended program to confirm which test scores are required, if any.

  • If you are not a native speaker of English, you must submit evidence of your proficiency in the English language. You may use the results from either one of two standardized tests for this purpose, not more than two years old. If you submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), you need a minimum overall score of 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or 80 for the Internet-based test. If you submit results from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), you need an average overall band score of at least 6.5. Only the scores from the Academic Module, not the General Training Module, are applicable.

If you are not a native speaker of English and are going to hold a teaching assistantship, we will assess your oral English proficiency when you arrive on campus. See www.itap.uconn.edu for details. If you have an IELTS score of 8.0 or higher on the Speaking band, that qualifies you for classroom contact with no further English proficiency testing. Before you are asked to teach in the classroom, our International Teaching Assistant Program staff will work with you to increase your conversational English proficiency if their assessment shows that you need it.

  • You may apply to more than one program at the same time by submitting an application packet for each program. There are several approved dual degree programs, for which only one application fee is required (see Fields of Study). Likewise, you may pursue more than one graduate degree at a time, so long as the faculties of all your active graduate programs know that you are doing so.
