Graduate Faculty Appointment

Graduate Faculty Appointment

Any person who wishes to serve as a major advisor of graduate students must be appointed at the appropriate level (masters or doctoral or certificate) by the Dean of the Graduate School. The appointment is specific to a particular field of study or area of concentration. The Dean of The Graduate School appoints members of the graduate faculty based on the recommendation of a department or program head and Dean of their school/college, which authorizes their service as major advisor to any graduate student in the appropriate field of study or area of concentration. Any members of the University of Connecticut faculty may serve as associate advisors whether or not they are members of the graduate faculty.

Questions about appointments should be directed to gradschool@uconn.edu.

Mentorship Training

The Graduate School is pleased to announce the rollout of our mentorship training program for new faculty. Mentorship training will enable faculty to be more successful in their roles as a major advisor and is part of The Graduate School’s commitment to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all graduate students.

Beginning in Fall 2024, all new faculty who want to be appointed to the Graduate Faculty will sign up to complete an 8-hour mentorship-training as part of their onboarding. After completing the training, new faculty can apply to be appointed to the Graduate Faculty. As we train more facilitators, we will open the training to current faculty.

The Graduate School is offering the necessary mentorship training on multiple dates. The training will be led by our certified facilitators and will follow the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) curriculum.

Current Available Training Dates:

  • Thursday, January 16th, 2025, from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Friday, February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th, 2025, from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm ONLINE for each session
